Fast moving and very violent engagement on the flanks of territory erroneously considered safely taken and once those flanks are demanding resources, an even more violent frontal attack.
If we are to follow Wictor's affections, look for that which would be analogous to flamethrowers.

If we extend the WW1 analogy further, expect to see currently undetected mines to explode under the Democrat's feet. Watch for treachery at high levels. Novel munitions like poison gas. WW1 was pretty much the first fully industrialised general war. What we have experienced is the first fully digitised information war. I do expect to find many connections between the two.
The Mad Wizard may yet have utility. Recall his comments on Saudi and the Gulf States.
