"Real change for aboriginal women begins with the end of prostitution"

Cherry Smiley is an indigenous feminist and project manager for violence prevention and safety at the Native Women’s Association of Canada and member of the Women’s Coalition for the Abolition of Prostitution.

"[P]rostitution is not a traditional activity for aboriginal women and, in fact, is ‘the world’s oldest oppression.’ It is a system, like Canada’s residential school system, that has been imposed on our aboriginal communities. Prostitution is part of the continuum of colonial male violence against aboriginal women and girls, telling us incorrectly that we are disposable in life and that predators can harm us without recourse.

"The end point of that continuum is the thousands of missing and murdered aboriginal women and girls, an ongoing massacre that continues to tell us that we are disposable, even in death, with no official inquiry or accountability."

"Aboriginal women and girls deserve more than to be violated daily by johns and sold by pimps. What we need are real choices. As prostitution abolitionists, we support the new law but we want more – we want true social change that redefines masculinity as being about partnership, and gives women and girls the unconstrained liberty to be ourselves and live free from exploitation and poverty. We want comprehensive prostitution prevention and exiting strategies, and a robust public education campaign that re-educates Canadians about prostitution as a form of male violence against women and a racist and colonial system that targets racialized and aboriginal women and girls. Supporting the abolition of prostitution and the new legislation stands in agreement with our traditional aboriginal teachings – it tells us that we are worthy of freedom, respect, and love."

Accepting donations for the Family of Emily Pike.

14 year old Emily Pike, a member of the San Carlos Apache tribe, was murdered.
Her body was found 100 miles away, dismembered in trash bags.

"What was done to Emily Pike is nothing short of horrific. The way this case was handled from the start was atrocious. Her case was not taken seriously because she was considered a "runaway". Her family was not properly informed of her disappearance, and when she was found, details that should NOT have been delivered to the media in the way that they were made it to the public without even the family being made aware.
To her family, if you all read this:
I know the words that we could write would never fix the pain of what you all are experiencing in this time of loss. The trauma and pain of something this horrific is beyond explanation or words. We are praying for some sort of light to come to you all and comfort you all in this time of such great darkness. Emily could never have deserved an ending like this. May the one who committed this crime against her and against your family be brought to justice, may they never know peace.
May we continue to fight for a world in which our precious children are safe from this.

She didn’t merit the national media coverage that Gabby Petito did. 😞😢

Emily was listed as "Missing/Runaway." Emily wasn’t publicly identified until last week after a memo was leaked from the Gila County Sheriff’s Office on social media. The memo said her head and torso were found in trash bags and some of her remains are still missing." She was not the first or only young girl to have run away from the group home where she stayed.

"Justice for Emily" was written in red plastic cups at the intersection of Mesa Drive and McKellips Road in Mesa, the last place 14-year-old Emily Pike was seen alive.

A vigil, put on by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, is not just for Emily, but for all MMIWP, or Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and People.

A display of 1181 hearts representing the missing and murdered indigenous women and girls across Canada.

1181 between 1980 and 2012 according to the RCMP. According to the Minister of the Status of Women that number is actually closer to 4000.

New FBI Report Details Patterns of Violence Against Native Women, Children
https://nativenewsonline.net/health/new-fbi-report-details-patterns-of-violence-against-native-women-children

The FBI’s latest report exposes alarming trends in violence against Native women, reinforcing the urgency of the MMIP crisis. Advocates call for better data & resources.

"An FBI report on violent and sexual crimes against Native American women provides new data about the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP) crisis.

The report, Violence Against American Indian or Alaska Native Females: 2021 - 2023, uses data from the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) to identify relationships between victims and offenders, weapons used, locations of incidents, and ages of victims in both violent crimes and victims of sexual crimes.

Native Americans face murder rates that are ten times the national average, with homicide ranking among the top 10 causes of death for Native women. While the Bureau of Indian Affairs estimates there are 4,200 unsolved MMIP cases, advocates say the actual number is likely higher. Family members of MMIP victims and survivors have brought national attention to the disproportionate rates of violence Native women face and the large number of unsolved cases. Despite increased federal resources, inconsistent record-keeping across jurisdictions and limited data continue to complicate efforts to address the crisis.

The FBI report analyzed nearly 35,000 incidents of violent and sexual crimes committed against Native American women. Key findings show that firearms are commonly used against the victims of violent crimes, while personal weapons are used to commit sexual offenses. Most offenses occur at residences. Native American adults are most often victims of violence, while Native juveniles make up most victims of sexual offenses.

Haley Omeasoo (Hopi, Blackfeet), executive director of MMIP nonprofit Ohkomi Forensics, wrote in an email to Native News Online that the report is an important step to improving the quality of data on the MMIP crisis.

“Working in the forensics field and advocating for MMIP cases, I get asked all the time what the statistics are concerning violence against Indigenous women and people,” Omeasoo wrote “Every time I tell them that I can give you the information that is available online, but most often times these statistics are inaccurate and an undercount. Whether it’s due to underreporting or racial and gender misclassification, there is just not an accurate data representation for Natives in these larger databases.”

Pinpointing trends in the violence that characterize the MMIP crisis could help direct resources — funding for public safety and victim support, for instance — to where they will be most effective.

“It’s super important to collect and analyze this information pertaining to violence against Indigenous people in the FBI special reports because we get a better idea of the extent and severity of the MMIP epidemic,” Omeasoo continued. “Especially with the incidents occurring often by an intimate partner. So, these aren’t just crimes that are occurring to Natives by unknown, non-native assailants; these are happening within our own home communities, and this report is evidence that there needs to be more resources being offered to ensure the safety of our people.”

The #Madison police chief, Shon F. Barnes, identified the 15-yr-old shooter as Natalie Rupnow, who went by the name Samantha. “She was a student at the school & evidence suggests that she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Barnes said.

Barnes said officers went to the school after a 2nd grade student called 911 just before 11AM to report a shooting. “I want to let that soak in for a minute” he said.

The New York Times · Madison Police Identify Wisconsin School Shooter as 15-Year-Old Girl: Live UpdatesBy Julie Bosman
INDIGENOUS WOMAN

She has a young face
An old face
She carries herself well
In all ages
She survives all man has done
In some tribes she is free
In some religions
She is under man
In some societies
She's worth what she consumes
In some nations
She is delicate strength
In some states
She is told she is weak
In some classes
She is property owned
In all instances
She is sister to earth
In all conditions
She is life bringer
In all life she is our necessity
See the woman eyes
Flowers swaying
On scattered hills
Sundancing calling in the bees
See the woman heart
Lavender butterflies
Fronting blue sky
Misty rain falling
On soft wild roses
See the woman beauty
Lightning streaking
Dark summer nights
Forests of pines mating
With new winter snow
See the woman spirit
Daily serving courage
With laughter
Her breath a dream
And a prayer
