Girl on the Net<p>Today I broke an <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>accessibility</span></a> feature on my site, and turned off <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/audio" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>audio</span></a> for UK users. </p><p>Everyone else can listen as usual. UK users cannot. </p><p>You can still read the text. But you can't hear the <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/accessible" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>accessible</span></a> version. </p><p>This is the Online Safety Act: <a href="https://www.girlonthenet.com/osa/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">girlonthenet.com/osa/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>Pls share</p>

When last I checked I couldn't enter my birthday in it. Ah well.</p>
James Scholes<p>Decided to sign up for <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/Codeberg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Codeberg</span></a>, the <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/GitHub" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GitHub</span></a> alternative that the Fediverse at large is insisting is worth a try and, in some cases, claiming will improve project contributions by avoiding some of the GH antipatterns. I expected to find some <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>accessibility</span></a> issues; this is the modern web, after all.</p><p>I did not expect a fully inaccessible visual CAPTCHA with no workarounds. I'm unable to solve it, so I cannot create an account.</p><p>In short: If you want people who are <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/blind" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>blind</span></a> or <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/lowVision" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lowVision</span></a> to contribute to your projects (you do, right?), Codeberg is currently not an <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/accessible" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>accessible</span></a> platform.</p>
Bits<p>We share in case this might be of use. Our friends in a large portion of the <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/USA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>USA</span></a> might be experiencing severe weather tomorrow. This is a great 24-7 stream to monitor for <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/Accessible" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Accessible</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/Weather" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Weather</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/WX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WX</span></a> updates. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFcykaD6g0M" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=SFcykaD6g0</span><span class="invisible">M</span></a> And his main channel often goes live for coverage during severe weather events. Samuel Proulx<p><span>Another random thing that made me happy tonight: I discovered that at some point </span><a href="https://fed.interfree.ca/tags/wordweb" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#wordweb</a><span> added a feature to disable linking of words in addon dictionaries. That makes reading definitions with a </span><a href="https://fed.interfree.ca/tags/screenreader" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#screenreader</a><span> much faster. It's a bit expensive, but if you frequently find yourself resorting to Google, or even worse </span><a href="https://fed.interfree.ca/tags/AI" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#AI</a><span>, to define words for you, it's worth the money and is largely </span><a href="https://fed.interfree.ca/tags/accessible" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#accessible</a><span> as well: </span><a href="https://wordweb.info/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">wordweb.info/</a><span> </span><a href="https://fed.interfree.ca/tags/a11y" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#a11y</a></p>
Samuel Proulx<p><b><span>My first thought</span></b><span><br><br>man, we're so spoiled on Mastodon. There are like four </span><a href="https://fed.interfree.ca/tags/accessible" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#accessible</a><span> web apps, multiple accessible IOS and Android apps, at least two accessible Windows apps (even if they both have some issues), and a couple accessible mac apps. As </span><a href="https://fed.interfree.ca/tags/screenreader" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#screenreader</a><span> users we can actually choose the one we like, rather than picking the one where the largest number of features actually work with a screen reader.<br><br></span><b><span>My Second Thought</span></b><span><br><br>Man, this should just be the default state of existence. </span><a href="https://fed.interfree.ca/tags/Blind" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Blind</a><span> folks need to demand more. But I get it, it's so easy to just accept the current state of accessibility as normal, and then be surprised by things that actually work.</span></p>

Samuel ProulxSo I've finally been driven off of Microsoft edge and on to <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.interfree.ca/tag/firefox" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Firefox</a>. The <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.interfree.ca/tag/a11y" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#a11y</a> work that's been done over the last few years really shows; it flies with <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.interfree.ca/tag/nvda" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#NVDA</a> on my system. Also, syncing of tabs works better than on either Edge or Safari, and my tabs from other devices are actually in a reasonable place where I can find them. However, I really, really miss the automatic generation of <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.interfree.ca/tag/alttext" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#alttext</a> that both Edge and Chrome have built-in. I know Firefox was going to make that a thing, but I believe the disgusting shrieking of folks against <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.interfree.ca/tag/ai" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#AI</a> even for <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.interfree.ca/tag/accessibility" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#accessibility</a> killed it. I do wish it was an addon, at least. There are a couple pages where I still need to go back to Edge to use them because the image links aren't labeled. Not using them isn't an option; bills gotta get paid. I also had to turn off all of the tracking protection stuff to get HCaptcha to work. Sadly, in a battle between privacy and accessibility, for me, accessibility *has* to win every time. While I'm enjoying the speed and slightly better access to certain parts of pages, I couldn't recommend it to average <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.interfree.ca/tag/blind" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#blind</a> users at this point. You have to change random settings to get some things to be <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.interfree.ca/tag/accessible" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#accessible</a>, and you have to use another browser whenever alt-text is missing.
Jonathan Van Zanten :mastodon:<p><a href="https://wetdry.world/tags/X" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>X</span></a>'s implementation of its latest <a href="https://wetdry.world/tags/moderation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>moderation</span></a> decision, to include the term "c*sgender" in their (undoubtedly rancid) collection of swears, curses, and other nasty words, is IMO warranted, as we shouldn't allow the gradual outing of normal persons from an evermore hostile internet.</p><p>The main proponents of a successful internet should be its moderation tools. While a manually maintained list is sufficient for most usecases, with the growth and ever increasing need of an <a href="https://wetdry.world/tags/accessible" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>accessible</span></a> internet, we should also look for inclusion of hateful terms identified by automatic tools, such as sentence sentiment analysis, methinks.</p>
Chris C<p>I received my new Capital One credit card today that I had to activate before I could use it. Never saw this type of activation, but it was pretty cool. All I had to do is open the app, tap on activate new card, It said, put phone next to new card so I did, my phone vibrated and it was done. It looks like it uses the NFC chip in the card to connect to the phone through the app and activate. A quick, easy, and most importantly, accessible process! 👍, <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/CapitalOne" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CapitalOne</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/Credit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Credit</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/Card" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Card</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/Activation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Activation</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/iPhone" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iPhone</span></a> <a href="https://dragonscave.space/tags/Accessible" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Accessible</span></a></p>

Michael Doise<p>So I’ve been really enjoying the <a href="https://techopolis.social/tags/WordPress" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WordPress</span></a> Full Site Editor, but I think I'm going back to GeneratePress. FSE themes are cool, and <a href="https://techopolis.social/tags/accessible" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>accessible</span></a>, but they just don't have the customization options that I'd expect, a theme to have.
