Is legislated morality moral?
A thread, I suspect, as I try to express something.
I haven't seen much here in the way of opinions of what was seen on The Pit this morning. I have a few thoughts, but what weighs on me isn't the fraud that was exposed (didn't we all expect it?) but the Avatar/AI that is essentially a lie detector. It wasn't even the technology, itself that I found disquieting. It was the opinions expressed about it. The sentiments expressed by some took me back to two memories
I beg for your patience as I share those two memories, very different from each other, but that share a tiny thread. '
Many years ago, I read an opinion piece by a Muslim who said the morality in his country was higher than in ours. Their women were more virtuous than ours.
I thought about that article for a long time and came to decide that morality under the threat of stoning isn't that moral. It is legislated morality enforced by fear. Yes, we may be more decadent in the west, but....
People who are virtuous in the west truly ARE virtuous because if they're not, they don't face death. They have a CHOICE.
The other memory is from a few years ago when I was working a televised dog show. Some of my new coworkers were, on average, 25 years old. Because our task was social media, the question of privacy came up. One of the young associates couldn't understand what the fuss was over being tracked by activities on social media. He had nothing to hide, he said. I pointed out....
"what if" scenarios. What if something he had done al his life that was legal, suddenly became illegal through the whim of a governor. Mind you, this was NYC & Bloomberg had just outlawed jumbo sized sodas at Madison Sq. Garden. My coworker looked at me with deer in headlights eyes. He hadn't considered that.
Today, one of the comments made in regards to the Avatar/Ai/Truth detector was that it would put an end to deceit. It would end crime. Since he had nothing to fear, it didn't impact him
So I circle back to my two recollections.
If you are forced to tell the truth, is it the same as having truth in your heart and wanting to do the right thing because it's the right thing to do?
if you have nothing to hide one day, does that mean in the wrong hands, that technology could be used against you when something previously legal now isn't?
I disagree with my friend about this technology. It is a slippery slope & I'm surprised he didn't see it.
Maybe it's just me.

This is a thread that makes one think. I enjoyed it. Thanks for posting it.
Yeah... I didn't like that AI ad that they ran close to The Pit lunch break.
