Artillery & flew missions in support of the 101st Airborne & Special Forces units based out of northern I Corp. Schultze participated in the defense of Firebase Ripcord & Lam Son 719, the invasion of Laos. On Feb 10, 1971, his Cobra was shot down while supporting South Vietnamese forces. Schultze successfully landed the damage aircraft, avoided enemy troops & was rescued by an American helicopter operating in the vicinity.
