Free Speech according to the idea of mostly left-wing oriented operators of Mastodon instances means to permanently exclude at least 500 instances worldwide from the federation because of "wrong opinions".
It took me more than a week of intensive research to find the part of Fediverse that was locked out by the Federation.
Mastodon, contrary to all praise, is degenerating into an even more censored platform than Twitter and Facebook combined.

@sophia_sardegna Wow, Free Atlantis made the list. It must be very dangerous here.
There is no independent internet.
There is always and only a choice between greater and lesser evils in the digital world.
@sophia_sardegna I don't mind people having "wrong" opinions. Most opinions are "wrong", as long as they engage in a civil and polite discussion. Having said that it should be obvious where I draw the line. If you're being a douche intentionally, sorry, you're making it on my block list. We could elaborate further on what would even constitute "free speech", since that is a sore point of contention. I'm open to discussion on this topic any day.
I do not succeed in the "privilege" of being a jerk
There are always 2 perspectives:
One that addresses a world as it should be and one that addresses a world as it is.
My personal point is that the Fediverse does not deserve the reputation of representing Free Speech when third party opinions are suppressed.
If I want to block someone, I do it.
ANYONE who thinks they have the right to decide for me what I have to block, or even blocks themself in such a way that I don't see what I want to see, is an infantile, narcissistic fascist who decides arbitrarily and therefore has no idea about freedom.
And of course, every instance operator can do whatever he wants.
But if he blocks, deletes or disconnects as he sees fit, he is not representing "free speech" and can no longer speak of meaningful participation in a "Fediverse" without leading himself completely to absurdity.
This is fine and should be communicated exactly this way, instead of creating the impression that everyone is actually connected to everyone else, as is currently the case.
THAT is mendacious to the max and disguises the infantile egoism that is leading the Fediverse.
Briefly:
NOTHING in the Fediverse is better than on Facebook,Twitter & Co. - unfreedom is merely better hidden, better camouflaged ...
It is controlled by the operators of the instances who arbitrarily decide what you get to see.
And this under the guise of care that pretends to protect against hate.
Hate can then be anything that the respective instance operator defines as such.
This already begins with dissenting opinions, which are suppressed in this way.
Whether it is closed source or open source - the result is identical for all those who do not follow the framing of the masses.
You don't understand the underlying problem.
Instead, you beat around the bush like a cat.
Not that there is anything fundamentally wrong with your explanations - they just have no connection whatsoever with the problem I described.
I would like to point out that you cannot be part of a problem and its effective solution at the same time.
I can already do much more, for example, establish a network in which nothing is censored except pure inhumanity.
Especially not opinions that are different from my own.
I take free speech seriously.
@sophia_sardegna
> in which nothing is censored except pure inhumanity.
defining pure inhumanity in a way everyone agrees already is nearly impossible.
this still is the best writeup on free speech imho: https://blog.freespeechextremist.com/blog/what-is-freedom-of-speech.html
My instance is on the list... Quite an honor.
I have been operating ~18 months, and have had 3 reports. And they got the reply; "If you think the posts break the law, then please contact the authorities alternatively raise a civil suit against the user."
The speech-sensitive snowflakes were;
mastodon.online
mastodon.social
yiff.life
There is a "secret group" consisting of mainly German, left-wing & socialist-oriented Mastodon admins (instance operators) who specify who, ergo which instance in the Fediverse is to be blocked.
I know someone who has access to this group.
Admins or instance operators who do not follow the prescribed block list and other rules are branded (with their instance).
This is fascism in its purest form.
@sophia_sardegna @niclas @iron_bug When I buy mastodon, such actions will be banned.
@elonmusk @sophia_sardegna @niclas @iron_bug isnt mastodon.cf the one that had nothing but incest porn bots spamming the relays?
@lamp @elonmusk @sophia_sardegna @niclas @iron_bug Well, that's sort of the price of freedom of speech that sometimes there will be people with a different taste than you. Feel free to set up any filter you like to filter out stuff you don't want to see.
@elonmusk @sophia_sardegna @niclas @iron_bug @lbthomsen i dont care but i didnt think mastodon.cf was a legit instance that people actually used. also it doesn't even work..
@sophia_sardegna @niclas @iron_bug Why am I not surprised.
@iron_bug
that there is a group of german leftist fedi admins who are in a competition for maximum wokeness is no secret though :P
then, i blocked these servers for my user, as i only got flames from there never good discussion. so it isn't a problem for me anymore.
I follow Voltaire, who quite rightly insinuates that unless one defends the opinion of others against censorship in the same way as one defends one's own, one does not stand up for freedom of expression.
EVERY USER, not instance operators, may, should and must be able to decide for themselves with which opinion they agree or disagree.
This also includes that the USER decides which user or which instance he blocks.
If an instance operator intervenes, he immediately acts arbitrarily and, as it were, unquestioningly by proxy - is thus not one whit better than Mr Zuckerberg or the respective head of Twitter.
This is not changed by their own moral elevation, because the "right wrong" is suppressed.
@niclas @sophia_sardegna @iron_bug And people wonder why the word “fascism” has lost its meaning. Please explain to me how content moderation fits the definition of fascism. The purest form of fascism centers around subjecting your life to the interests of the state. When we expand the definition so much to include all sorts of nebulous things we risk rendering it meaningless and useless.
@sophia_sardegna @niclas @iron_bug What happens when the dissenting behavior is constructed in such a way to deliberately cause harm? What happens when such behavior is emblematic of entire instances with, at best, unresponsive moderation teams? Should we allow hate and toxicity to fester freely? Where do you draw the line between free speech and speech specifically designed to harm the other individual? These are extremely difficult questions. Nobody said moderation is easy.
I don't think the line is that difficult. I moderate, and the standard reply is very simple; "If you think the user has broken any laws, please contact the police in Germany (my instance's home), or the country where the user lives."
And if I get court order to take down a user's post, I will do that.
I don't care if someone find someone else's speech so called "hateful". If you yell "Puppies are cute", there are people who will find that "hateful". If you promote "democracy" there are countries where that is against the law.
End of the day, there is no "line"as the line is a subjective construct and irrelevant to "Free Speech" (if that is what one upholds as a guiding star).
@sophia_sardegna @niclas @iron_bug Also, you're again using the word too easily. Is there any pressure, to subject your own interests to the ones of the instance moderators, or else? Are you branded a traitor for not participating in the dominant narrative? Is your life at risk for being a member of the out group your moderators dislike? Come on, lets not forget what fascism really is.
Fascism is devote your life to the state against an imaginary enemy, or else. You can always switch instances.
@sophia_sardegna @niclas @iron_bug @elonmusk It seems you are a nationaliste right ? Yeah, hate has no place in our wounderfull peacefull open minded and made of clever people sharing on mastodon. Return to your hate cave with no light twitter and never come back. They will feed you with fake news and you will ask more because it will give no end to your neverending appetit for hate on something. I will probably meet you under a bridge : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMEe7JqBgvg Ugly thing you are.
Nice of you to post your diary here. I hope you had a safe landing at the end.
@sophia_sardegna @niclas @iron_bug that's the dumbest piece of text i've seen in like ten days or so. free speech and fascism are about the state, there's little to no state in self-organising social media
@sophia_sardegna Good to see a libertarian defence of free speech.
