The long Fishing Pier at Edmonds, WA stretches out over the Puget Sound at dawn, illuminated by lampposts and leading towards the distant snow-capped Olympic Mountains, including The Brothers.
The calm water reflects the soft hues of the sunrise, creating a tranquil early morning scene in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.

We took to the mountains on Saturday to escape the vog and our phones. There are many places on Maui where you don't have cell phone signals -- just the sounds of the wind and forest birds. Indy enjoyed the journey and we all got a great view of Mauna Kea (with snow!) and Mauna Loa.

A photograph of a donkey grazing in a rocky mountainscape.

This was taken whilst walking up the valley towards Toubkal, in the Moroccan High Atlas mountains. We'd set off early, before dawn, hoping to bypass the police checkpoints which had been established as part of a drive to make visiting climbers use local guides (this was/is a complicated situation, and one which was probably well-intentioned. We meant no disrespect, but did not need a guide). We got spotted!

The donkeys are used to ferry supplies up to the refuges, lazy trekkers' luggage and occasionally shameless 'trekkers' themselves. As in all parts of the world, the donkeys' quality of life varies enormously, and visitors need to be careful about the impact they have.

In the photo, the donkey is facing slightly away from the camera and eating something on the ground. It is wearing a harness and blanket of mainly green and gold colours and has had its (relatively moderate) load removed for a rest. It is sound, and in reasonable (though lean) condition. The ground in front of it slopes steeply upwards towards mixed snow and rock terrain, and a setting moon. The sky above is a perfect blue.

The snow blot test. What do you see?

This morning we had a hint of light getting underneath the snow clouds. Enough to make us smile.

I'm using a 60-600mm telephoto by Sigma for this scene. It's a big lens that I usually don't make an effort to take off the shelf. This winter I've really loved having it with me for chasing birds and snow capped peaks.

Many treasured memories were made, especually thanks to the friendly people and breathtaking scenery.
