Since using Proxmox seemed totally overkill for just using a virtualized Windows10, I reached out to Quemu & VirtManager. It has not been the easiest task in the world, almost two hours to understand the cryptic error messages and solve them. A novice at all this would have given up after the first few minutes.

Obviously, a novice would not try to virtualize an OS on a server to remotely access it, but there is still room for improvement.

I thought my old home server was not the cause of some of my problems because its resource consumption rarely reached 50% CPU and RAM. However, the new one, a much more powerful server displays streaming video and runs all other services for the local network at lightning speed.

I still have a lot to learn about home server hardware.

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 84 ✨

After spending 24 hours doing Olympic-level mental gymnastics, trying to find a way to self-host my videos NOT on PeerTube (I considered Wordpress's VideoPress, embedding videos from NextCloud, uploading straight to Ghost...) I have capitulated.

Yes I will go with #PeerTube.

Deciding factor: the need to have subtitles (not so easy if you host your own videos).

So yes I will set up my own instance (it would cost as much as donating to an admin... because video hosting/streaming is resource intensive).

Oh dear I will have ANOTHER Fediverse account in addition to Mastodon, GoToSocial, Pixelfed, Friendica, Sharkey, Misskey, Lemmy, MBin and PieFed. I need to sit with this thought for a bit :ItsFine:

Folks, video is HARD (making videos and distributing them, that is)

Edit: SPECIAL THANKS to @stereo @Bro666 @erick who offered incredible advice (while I was doing my mental gymnastics). I really appreciate your help! 🏆

Dear Fedi friends, do you have any experience with #Wordpress and their paid add-on #VideoPress – that allows you to basically turn your Wordpress site into a streaming hub for your videos?

https://videopress.com

This week I'm exploring self-hosting videos on PeerTube and also via other options (Wordpress, Ghost, etc.).

I just heard about VideoPress and I haven't come across anyone using it, so I'm curious 🤗

quel solution pour héberger fichier et agenda sur un petit serveur ?
j'hésite mais je suis assez contraint en ressources hardware (genre 2go de ram et un disque à bout de souffle) #cloud #selfhosting

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 77 ✨

This morning I'm attempting a manual install of #Fail2Ban (that is, with commands, no YunoHost) on my #Ubuntu VPS.

I've been greatly enjoying Fail2Ban on my #Debian VPS and I'd like to extend the same protections to the VPS with my self-hosted #Ghost blog.

I hope nothing goes wrong because I have a video call with Stanford students at the study abroad program in Florence at 11am (for a women in cinema class, I'm invited every year)... so I don't wanna feel distracted by tech issues, ha!

New instance, new #introduction post!

Hi, my name is Ed! I go by he/him, and as stated on my profile am a huge heckin' nerd. Came over to this neck of the woods after discovering its existence, as it seemed a bit more descriptive of my general vibes than my previous residence.

General interests (ie stuff you'll find me posting about or retooting) include but are not limited to: #FanArt , #miniatures , #paintingMiniatures , #warhammer , #classicGaming , #indieGaming , #linuxGaming , #fightingGames , #fgc , #programming , #selfHosting , #comics , #sciFi

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 76 ✨

Monday morning, which means: backing up my #YunoHost setup.

I see that #GoToSocial has an update available but I'm too scared to upgrade it. Having my 4th cup of espresso and working up the courage to do it (I hear it takes a looong time). Hoping I don't break anything 😅

In other news, I am LOVING my #LinkStack and having a glimpse into the links that are the most popular (LinkStack offers you a ranking in reverse order of the most clicked links when you log into their dashboard). Is anyone interested in me writing about it? For reference, here is what the front end looks like: https://elena.social

Off I go update my #GoToSocial, wish me luck!

Which brings to the final point and closing the loop: the feedback effects of software and economic models and organization. E.g., If #selfhosting was dead easy (via NAS etc) it could expand to be as common as an AC plug or water faucet.

Or maybe decentralization could be resolved at municipal level ("city clouds")

Only then can you really look at web protocols and rank them according to fitness.

In the meantime we will have a cacophony of wildly different ideas competing for mindshare
