I think it's time for a re-introduction!

Hello fediverse! I am an admin for Veganism.Social, VoIP engineer, sim-racer with @ethixracing, gamer, foodie, and long-time ethical vegan. I'm originally from South Florida, but now living in the Orlando area as of 2020. I'm usually not a very social person, but I'm trying to change that! I want to make a difference in the world, and one person cannot do that alone, so connecting with others is essential.

My political and ethical views are all centered around equality, compassion, and environmental protection. I am anti-capitalist, but I also understand that it's impossible in the current state of society to avoid participating in it. So I try to make the best decisions I can with the options given to me in order to minimize the harm it causes.

Humans and animals all over the world are facing troubling times, and thinking about it has taken a massive toll on my mental health. Now, I am trying to focus my efforts on things that I can change, rather than spreading myself too thin and not helping at all. This doesn't mean I'm ignoring all of the other suffering, but simply trying to prioritize based on what is within my reach.

Thank you for taking the time to read, and if you feel like we have something in common, give a follow! I look forward to meeting like-minded individuals and organizations that seek to make the world a better place!

#TIL about one of the many potentially important standards reports that seem to have been pushed onto the backburner by the pandemic.;

"The report, Ethically Aligned Design, was released today by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). It is the culmination of a year's work by 250 world leaders in technology, law, social science, business and government spanning six continents."

“A critical thing that #AI notetaking lacks […] are the non-verbal cues from the speakers," [Margaret Mitchell, chief #ethics scientist at Hugging Face] says.

“The tech-booster answer to that problem might be to get AI notetakers to incorporate visual processing as well. "But then we’re at the #surveillance issue," she says — and your harried Monday morning visage becomes another data point to count #against you.”

A dangerous, damaging civil war at the #Justice Department

- #RuthMarcus

“What’s going on is nothing short of a civil war inside the Justice Department, a battle over whether its lawyers are going to serve as the obedient shock troops for President Donald #Trump or as custodians of the rule of #law, with simultaneous duties to defer to policy determinations of the incumbent administration & to respect professional standards.”

Part of the consideration for #DOJ lawyers is whether simply signing the document would mean risking their #bar license, since major ethical objections have already been made to dropping the case.

But in those private discussions, many of the lawyers believed it would be a worse outcome if all the section’s lawyers were fired or forced to resign over the #EricAdams case.

Lawyers in the section understand that the outcome is in many ways already determined: Judges have little discretion but to ultimately accept such a motion. Nevertheless, it appears increasingly likely that the trial judge may hold a hearing to question #DOJ ofcls about the decision. Such a hearing could be difficult & embarrassing for the dept’s new leaders.

Before being summoned for the tense meeting, lawyers in the section debated their bad options, but came to increasingly believe that someone should step forward to save the jobs of the others….

#EmilBove, speaking on a video call, demanded that the court motions be signed within an hour… leaving participants with the impression that they might face disciplinary action if no one complied.

On Thurs, 6 lawyers — the #Trump-appointed acting US attorney for #SDNY & 5 prosecutors in Washington — resigned rather than accede to #EmilBove’s demands. On Fri, a 7th stepped down, writing in his resignation letter that only a “fool” or a “coward” would sign off on the dismissal.

But those close to the #PublicIntegrity section prosecutors described Sullivan’s decision to put his name on the document as heroic. The reason … [he did it was] to protect others….

By Friday afternoon, a veteran prosecutor in the section, Ed Sullivan, agreed to submit the request in Manhattan federal court to shield his colleagues from being fired, or resigning en masse, acc/to 3 people briefed on the interaction, speaking on the condition of anonymity for fear of #retribution.

The filing landed in the court docket Friday evening, bearing the name of Mr. Sullivan & that of a #criminal division supervisor as well as the signature of #EmilBove.

Under pressure, #DOJ lawyers felt forced to choose between bad options in the #EricAdams case.

The acting dpty AG, #EmilBove, a #Trump political appointee, made a demand that many of them viewed as improper: One of them needed to sign the official request to dismiss #corruption charges against Adams.

The lawyers knew that those who had already refused had resigned, & they could also be forced out.
