Homebrew Traffic Monitor Performs Useful Traffic Surveys

Here is another interesting insight: I'm now able to estimate, that #traffic from #Mastodon to @heiseonline could be roughly 40% bigger, than we are "seeing". This would confirm, that since the middle of 2023 we got as many visits from here, as from #Twitter.
Let me explain
You know, how #Mastodon doesn't send a Referrer, so it's diffcult to track the #traffic it brings. Well since about december, mastodon.social does (and other instances have since followed).
That allows me to see, how many visits come from the biggest instance via our own links (with an UTM-parameter) and how many in total. Seems like the second is consistently 20 - 40 % more than the first.
If there's interest – and if I find the time – I'll think about how I could visualize that..
Last week here at @heiseonline we had two #microblogging services that brought as much #traffic as #X brought, before we stopped posting there: Still don't know why, but #Threads even beat #Mastodon. #Bluesky only third this time.

Hey #homelab users!
You probably already know me by my free @BoxyBSD project and I often got asked about IPv4 addresses. Currebtly, I tinker with a new but also honestly not free service. The idea is creating a static IP service for homelab users. I'm aware that there're already some around, so what could be some benefits here?
- Static single #IPv4 & #IPv6 /48 (so you can subnet your homelab to several /64 without breaking #slacc)
- Bigger subnets (IPv4: /29, /28, /27 | IPv6: /32)
- Full RIPE personalization (inc. abuse & Co)
- #OpenVPN, #Wireguard, #GRE Support
- Auto configure (e.g., you load the wireguard config on any client and the addresses Arena immediately bound to that interface)
- Split usage / multiple tunnels: Use different IPs from your subnets at different locations
- Integration into #BoxyBSD
- Location in Germany or Netherlands (selectable)
- Hosted on redundant #FreeBSD nodes
Pricing:
- The starter package probably around 10€/month (not more) + 15€ setup including 2T traffic
- Pricing for addiriinal/larger subnets not yet sure, probably higher setup fees to avoid hoppers and spamers to keep the addresses clean
- Optional traffic packages (when exceeding speed Limit of 10Mbit which should still be ok for most homelabs)
World this be interesting? Im aware that many ones already do this by VPS themselves, so this might just be a bit easier and optionally offering whole networks including RIPE personalizations.
In our progress roundup, prioritizing well-being over convenience produces benefits for people and environments. It’s meant safer streets in Warsaw, Poland; a healthier Sri Lankan capital; and even family members who feel more connected to each other. #solutions #poloand #traffic

Elon Musk’s Boring Company Is Tunneling Beneath Las Vegas With Little Oversight
—
Given Musk’s role advising President-elect Donald Trump on ways to slash regulations and #government oversight, Boring and the Vegas Loop project might be a harbinger for the country.
If I add the #traffic from #Mastodon & #Flipboard & #Bluesky into #Fediverse (I know, I know... but they're federated or bridged), they're now comparable to #Facebook.
Will be interesting to see that graph, when #Threads federates here and (!!) allows automated posts.

2024 is ending, time for a last look at the #traffic to @heiseonline via X/ #Twitter and its alternatives.
#Mastodon was very stable, which made it the biggest source by the end of the year. #Bluesky grew significantly at the end and is now clearly in second place. #X fell the whole year, and our departure (from posting there) just accelerated that. But #Threads (where we can't post automatically) is still far behind.

Guess what we're doing today: https://www.timeout.com/newyork/news/you-can-ride-a-1930s-subway-train-in-nyc-next-month-112124
Also striking: there are subway cars still running every day that are closer in age to these museum pieces from the 1930s than the year 2024.
Congestion relief can't come soon enough.
For way over a year now I'm sharing data on #traffic from #Mastodon, #Twitter etc. to heise.de, always hoping someone else adds another perspective. Turns out, #Bluesky had to come along :
Both at the #BostonGlobe and #TheGuardian Bluesky already easily beats #Threads.
Here's a good question and I have the answer: #Traffic per Follower for different social networks (here for the last 4 weeks).
#Mastodon is now behind #Bluesky, #Flipboard still far ahead. #X and #Threads are really far behind.

The week is over, here are some charts:
For two weeks in a row, #Mastodon brought more #traffic than #X / #Twitter to heise.de.
But I forgot, that's not just via @heiseonline, but also @heisec, @ct_Magazin, @heiseautos, @iX_Magazin etc. (but for Twitter its the same).
#Bluesky is way behind, #Threads even more. Only Twitter is clearly falling.

Exactly two years ago, we started to post links on #Mastodon via our account @heiseonline
https://mastodon.social/@heiseonline/109314036284496776
It took longer, than I expected, but here we are: it seems like this account now brings continuously more #traffic to heise.de than #X (#Twitter) in its entirety, although it only has ¼ of the follower number (and many of them don't seem to be active anymore).
I'll prepare some graphs after the weekend.

Vor genau zwei Jahren haben wir für @heiseonline unseren Account auf #Mastodon in Betrieb genommen
https://mastodon.social/@heiseonline/109314036284496776
After a good question another chart:
This one shows the #traffic to heise.de via #X/#Twitter (as a whole), (only!!) our account @heiseonline on #Mastodon (so also from the #Fediverse), our account on #Bluesky and #Threads (as a whole again) – weekly since the beginning of 2022..
Another week, another increase for @heiseonline
#Mastodon keeps growing (the last time, we got this much #traffic, was at the beginning of the year), #Bluesky, too. No big jumps, but we'll see, where it leads.
#Threads still brings very little, #Twitter stays weak.
As always, this is the traffic to heise.de via the different social media platforms.
Edit: In the graph, Mastodon, Bluesky and Threads are stacked together (as they are they biggest Twitter-alternatives).
2nd Edit: Graph added.
