I can't endorse this company's services without at least trying them, so keep your grain of salt handy. But I like the concept.

New #blog post: Moving #hosting for bentasker.co.uk from US to #EU providers

Given the recent political upheaval in the US, I decided it was worth looking at how viable it was to move my public facing infrastructure off of US owned providers.

This blog post covers the providers I tried and went with as well as how I got on with them

The registration server might now be getting hit too by fascists.

Not to worry, this campaign will continue. And if you notice it’s green, that’s the time to get in and sign up for membership.

A couple of people have already signed up as members (that I’m aware of) in the past half hour or so.

So you want to fight fascism and make a difference right now? Do this:

Join Codeberg e.V. – become part of the organisation; part of the resistance – and actively support this valuable and ethical EU-based anti-fascist¹ git hosting alternative that’s under attack by fascists as we speak:

Seriously, do it now.²

Volunteer and/or donate if you can.

Let’s send Codeberg’s membership through the roof and show these fucking fascists that when they push we push back twice as hard.

When you do, please add your voice to this thread so others can see.

I rarely ask this but please repost this far and wide.

Hey #homelab users!

You probably already know me by my free @BoxyBSD project and I often got asked about IPv4 addresses. Currebtly, I tinker with a new but also honestly not free service. The idea is creating a static IP service for homelab users. I'm aware that there're already some around, so what could be some benefits here?

- Static single #IPv4 & #IPv6 /48 (so you can subnet your homelab to several /64 without breaking #slacc)
- Bigger subnets (IPv4: /29, /28, /27 | IPv6: /32)
- Full RIPE personalization (inc. abuse & Co)
- #OpenVPN, #Wireguard, #GRE Support
- Auto configure (e.g., you load the wireguard config on any client and the addresses Arena immediately bound to that interface)
- Split usage / multiple tunnels: Use different IPs from your subnets at different locations
- Integration into #BoxyBSD
- Location in Germany or Netherlands (selectable)
- Hosted on redundant #FreeBSD nodes

Pricing:
- The starter package probably around 10€/month (not more) + 15€ setup including 2T traffic
- Pricing for addiriinal/larger subnets not yet sure, probably higher setup fees to avoid hoppers and spamers to keep the addresses clean
- Optional traffic packages (when exceeding speed Limit of 10Mbit which should still be ok for most homelabs)

World this be interesting? Im aware that many ones already do this by VPS themselves, so this might just be a bit easier and optionally offering whole networks including RIPE personalizations.

F/LOSS supply chains...

Anyone 'curious' about it these days?

Differences in the way Linux and FreeBSD operate?

Differences in the large stakeholders associated with each project?

Differences in where critical infrastructure is located?

Thoughts?

Improving snac Performance with Nginx Proxy Cache from @itnotes@snac.it-notes.dragas.net via

I decided to prematurely optimize and adjust this for my apache2 httpd server in debian where I run snac.

I've never done any caching etc before so it was a nice adventure to learn something new. The documentation helped and in the end it wasn't very hard. I learned a bit about some http headers and regex on the way too.

Basically it works like this:
Enable the relevant modules:

´a2enmod expires cache cache_disk´

Be sure "htcacheclean" is running to clean up old disk cache. (under debian see /etc/default/apache-htcacheclean or else the relevant systemd service)
Then add to the snac virtualhost config:
    CacheRoot /var/cache/apache2/mod_cache_disk
CacheQuickHandler off
CacheLock on
#Optional while testing stuff;
CacheDetailHeader on

#My Instance ist not at the root, but under "/social"; so this needs to be adapted:
<LocationMatch "^/social/[^/]+/s">
CacheEnable disk
ExpiresActive On
ExpiresDefault "access plus 30 days"
</LocationMatch>
This will use the disk cache to cache everything under the /s/ Path, same as the original ngnix tutorial, Utilizing the mod_expires to generate the appropriate cache headers (for lazy ones like me), In this case caching it for 30 days.
Further reading and all options explained under https://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/caching.html ff

Thanks for the initial tutorial @itnotes@snac.it-notes.dragas.net

There are some things I *love* about NextCloud. It's the only FOSS software that creates an accessible, central space on the Internet for individuals.

It also has some HUGE FLAWS. It's cumbersome to install and maintain, half its plugins are out of date or under-supported, its code is clunky and inefficient, and the most reliable hosting providers (managed) are either expensive or located on completely non-English websites.

I see it compared a lot to simple storage software, but I see it as something more akin to the Solid Pods (solidproject.org/). Something like this could be the home for every single person on the Internet if done correctly. NC isn't doing it correctly, but it is shedding light on the possibility that it could be done at all, without reinventing all the wheels.
